We’re back for on more round up of coin collecting news and articles to finish up the week! First, a look at the design candidates for the 2012 Proof Platinum Eagle with the theme “To Provide for the Common Defence”. Also, the two latest numismatic product releases from the US Mint, September 11 National Medals, Canadian polymer notes, 2012 National Coin Week, London Coin Fair, Chinese Gold and Silver Pandas, kilo gold coins, bullion sales decline, and notable auctions. At their most recent meeting the Commission of Fine Arts made a recommendation for the reverse design of the 2012 American Platinum Eagle. The article includes images of all eleven of the design candidates created by the United States Mint.

More recently, the CCAC reviewed the candidates and made a different recommendation for the platinum coin, and also reviewed designs for other programs.

Mint News Blog has posts on the two latest products released by the US Mint: the Lucretia Garfield First Spouse Gold Coin and the 2011 First Spouse Bronze Medal Set.

A German museum asked Dave Harper for help acquiring an example of this year’s September 11 National Medal for its collection.

According to this article, one of the Bank of Canada’s new $100 polymer notes became nearly unrecognizable after someone rubbed it with their hands for 15 minutes. A currency spokesperson said this was beyond what the bill was designed for.

A coin shop owner dropped five one ounce Gold Kruggerands into Salvation Army kettles in Frederick, Maryland.

The theme for 2012 National Coin Week (April 15 to 21) will be “Change in Money: Cowries to Credit Cards.” The ANA has a number of activities planned for the week.

An Austin-based firm U.S. Money Reserve Inc. has agreed to pay $5 million in restitution to settle allegations of false and deceptive trade practices.

Are some of the coin releases issued by various world mints becoming too gimmicky?

Information on the Chinese 2012 Gold and Silver Panda coins. The popular one ounce silver bullion option will have a maximum mintage of 8 million.

A Czechoslovakian mint will offer a limited mintage of one kilogram gold coins worth about $80,000. The coins will be sold to “die-hard collectors” in Europe.

US Mint bullion sales experienced a sharp decline during the month of November. The American Eagle gold and silver bullion coins had their lowest monthly sales in years.

And now for some notable auctions. First, this auction claims to be for the biggest coin collection ever on eBay. It includes 135 coin albums and is 1,129 pounds in total weight with 75% silver coins. There are over 300 photos included on a linked site.

Next, an auction for a 26 coin set of 1986-2011 American Silver Eagle bullion coins.

Last, the semi-key date 1921-D Mercury Dime in high grade PCGS MS66 with CAC verification.
