US Mint Sales: 2010 Proof Sets Win Race, Gold Eagles Jump
The United States Mint had a pretty good week, for a second time after several weeks of lazy sales. Most products outperformed prior gains, and the inaugural numbers for the 2010 United States Mint Proof Set were stronger than those of the 2010 Mint Set which were released a week earlier. The popular 2010 Proof Set launched Thursday, July 22, and beat the uncirculated 2010 Mint Set which was released exactly one week earlier. The proof sets started with 296,379 after four days, while the mint sets reached 247,085 after 11 days on the market.
This year looks to be no different than any other for the sets — proof coins continue to outrank uncirculated coins in popularity. The following chart, courtesy of parent site CoinNews.net, shows debuting Proof Set sales back to 2007.

Collectors continued to go for the other sets as well. 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set and 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set both exceeded their previous gains. The silver version climbed 7,261 vs 5,098, and the regular advanced 5,884 vs 4,408. All of the individual Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Sets improved, but the 2010 Presidential $1 Proof Set slowed slightly, rising by 2,805 compared to 3,598 previously.
As for individual coins, the biggest standout was the Proof American Buffalo gold coins. They surged by 799 and were followed by the American Veterans Disabled for Life proof dollars, which gained 672. Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coins saw the biggest improvement in its series, adding by 211 in this report vs 77 in the last.
Demand remains strong for American Silver Eagles. Another 716,500 were added since the 21st, making July’s total 2,652,000 and the YTD total 20,820,500. There was a run on the one ounce American Gold Eagles as well. 57,000 were added, bringing this month’s total to 142,000. The one-half ounce size advanced 1,000 during the week.
